Dear Hutchings Community,
This edition of The Hutchings Herald is a day late - thanks for your patience! My Friday was packed.
I hope your weekends are off to a nice start. Mine has already been busy with some work for Hutchings and some important family events, too. Today and tomorrow are busy, too. It never feels like there's enough time, but in May, that feels particularly true. Spring sports seasons are coming to their conclusions, and students have concerts and celebrations to mark a school year's worth of accomplishments. I find that successfully juggling May schedules comes with a high degree of difficulty, and I imagine this may be the case for many Husky families.
One of my favorite parts about being in a school in May is seeing students excited to take their learning outside of the building. This past week, our kindergarten classes travelled to Potter Park Zoo. In the coming weeks, we'll be sending students out to learn in our community. Upcoming trips include a walking trip through downtown Howell, a trip to Fowlerville Fairgrounds, and the Howell Nature Center. Field trips are crucial for extending our students' learning. They can provide hands-on learning, enrich academic experiences, improve social skills, and promote deeper understandings of the world beyond the classroom. Our entire staff is grateful to this year's PTO for their work supporting this learning. Thanks to families like yours who help raise funds through events like our Husky Hustle to provide opportunities to all students.
I was thinking about the busyness of May and how much I love field trips. After school is over, there's still work for me at Hutchings, but it gets a little less busy. Not only will my own schedule have more space, but so will my family's schedule. Though I haven't wrapped my head around what we''ll do yet, I'm excited to reconnect with my kids by looking for some 'summer field trips' we can take. Some are visiting a new town on a vacation, exploring a new trail, or some other outdoor adventure (I'm leaning toward canoeing, though I wouldn't recommend leaning in a canoe). And in our own community, you can't beat a field trip to the public library.
You send wonderful kids to Hutchings all school year. Thanks for all of your work and partnership this year. I hope you'll think about some of the fun experiences you and your family could have in June, July, and August. Put something on your calendar, because having a 'summer field trip' with your kids would prove well worth your time. We'll be ready to hear about your adventures and share some of our own, too when we return in August.
Have a lovely weekend.
Sincerely,
Ben Malecki
