Dear Hutchings Community,
This is a great week to celebrate Husky creativity!
Today, 3rd grade students in Mrs. Buckingham, Mrs. Highum, and Mrs. Nelson's classes hosted their Poetry Cafes! Students performed poems they memorized and some original poems, too for special guests. As a former English teacher, working on students with poetry was always my favorite. Poets find abstract ways to capture the human experience, and our third graders showed a lot of their creative skill.
Last Thursday, April 10, we had the first of our Spring Concerts with Ms. Shultz. Begindergarteners, Kindergarteners, and First Graders. The students were delightful. Not only did students sing and dance, but we saw creative costumes (Orca Whales! Pirates! Cheetahs!) and students introduced the songs to the audiences, too.
2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are all preparing for their upcoming concerts, too. More great creativity from our Husky musicians!
And, of course, we've had a lot of creative art projects going up in our hallways as part of One Book, One School. The fourth grade dragonflies are awfully impressive, but they're just one example of the projects we're seeing around Hutchings. If you make it to one of the upcoming concerts, you'll get to see some!
Albert Einstein is credited as having said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun", and Hutchings is a great place for creativity, intelligence, and fun. I hope you have a blend of those this weekend, too. Enjoy your holiday!
Sincerely,
Ben Malecki

District Updates:
Senior Survivor Carnival is Friday, April 25
Howell Public Schools will kick off Senior Survivor 2025 with the always-popular Senior Survivor Carnival on Friday, April 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Field House. The event will feature games, entertainment, inflatables, raffles, arts and crafts, and more. Admission is $10 for children aged 3 to 18; adults and children 2 and under are free. Proceeds support the fundraising efforts of Senior Survivor, which officially begins Sunday, April 27, as 14 seniors compete to raise the most money for this year’s charity, The Ivy Table. This local nonprofit is tackling food insecurity by rescuing surplus food and turning it into ready-to-eat meals, which are distributed through community fridges and served at a new pay-it-forward café. Counselor Connection:
As the weather begins to warm up, it's the perfect time to encourage our children to head outside and soak in the sunshine. Spending time outdoors isn’t just fun—it’s incredibly beneficial for a child’s physical, emotional, and academic development.
Research shows that outdoor play helps improve focus, reduce stress, and boost mood. Whether it’s riding a bike, exploring nature, or simply enjoying free play in the yard, outdoor time helps reset the brain, supporting learning and emotional regulation. Students who are active outside tend to return to class more focused and ready to learn.
As parents and caregivers, we can make a big impact by setting aside time for outdoor adventures—no screens required! A walk around the block, a trip to the park, or even helping in the garden can go a long way toward building strong, healthy habits that benefit both body and mind.
Let’s make the most of Michigan’s springtime and celebrate the outdoors together!-
