Dear Hutchings Community,
We're back, and we're so proud of your students. They're already learning, they're building some new friendships, and they're smiling, laughing, and having fun.
Every year I've spent at Hutchings has been wonderful and magical. A natural part of the start of a new year is a longing to recapture the magic from the year before. Part of the fun though is the new stuff though- it's been great to see all of our students meet their new teachers and classmates. We've made some great first impressions, and we've got some great positive momentum to carry us into the school year.
It's also exciting that Roo has started visiting and spending time in classrooms. For now, we've created a schedule that has Roo in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms everyday. After a month, we'll think about the best ways to get Roo into lower elementary classrooms and specials classrooms. We're moving thoughtfully with Roo and considering her needs, but she has been nothing short of extraordinary with our students.
Please take opportunities in the next few weekends to squeeze every last bit of summer out of 2024 that you can! We'll keep engaging students in fun, meaningful ways, but I plan on making sure to invest in family fun, too.
Have a lovely weekend. It's going to be a great year.
Sincerely,
Ben Malecki
Principal

District Updates:
Remember to Complete Your Child Nutrition and Education Benefits Application
This school year, the State of Michigan is providing free meals for all students, ensuring that every child has access to nutritious food during the school day. However, we strongly encourage eligible families to still complete the Child Nutrition and Education Benefits Application. Doing so opens up additional benefits like reduced Chromebook fees, discounts on college admissions and academic tests, lower-cost home internet, access to the Summer EBT program, and helps our district secure essential funding from state and federal programs. Please note that free meals do not include à la carte items at the secondary level. To learn more or to complete the application, visit https://bit.ly/3BkO45d.
Highlander Reading Express Books
If your child still has books checked out from The Highlander Reading Express, please have them return them to their school’s main office. The office will ensure that the books are returned to the Highlander Reading Express so that they can be enjoyed next summer.

Counselor's Corner:
Welcome back to a new school year! I am so happy to be serving as your school counselor! I work with parents, students, and teachers through a program of many services aimed at supporting the overall student experience. Examples of services in the school counseling program, based on student need, are:
- Small groups to help children learn to regulate emotions
- Individual sessions to help children adjust to school
- Opportunities to practice self-regulation and mindfulness during the school day
- Consultation with teachers to generate ideas for improving student performance
- Conferences with parents to reflect on their child’s social and emotional progress
If you or your child would benefit from support or resources, please reach out: kinneyk@howellschools.com
Thank you,
Kristen Kinney
