Dear Hutchings Community,
The biggest news in Hutchings Elementary School these days has four legs, black fur, and takes loads of naps... IT'S ROO!
Mrs. Jilek-Wolfe and her family have taken on the great responsibility of caring for Roo, a black lab puppy, who made her first appearance at Hutchings Elementary School on April 20. Roo's namesake is our school's namesake - Ruahmah J Hutchings. Roo the puppy is incredibly sweet and wonderfully curious. It's fun to imagine how she'll grow and help students and staff members for years to come.
Your student might have seen Roo, but Roo is still very young. She spends a lot of time in her crate and typically is only in for parts of days because there's a lot of action at Hutchings, and this is overwhelming for a pup. In fact, students know that they can't pet Roo until she's fully trained.
She'll be in Mrs. Jilek-Wolfe's care for about 10 more weeks, then she'll leave us for Therapy Dog Boarding School, where she'll train to become a fully-certified, bona fide (bone-a-fide!) therapy dog that can interact with everyone at Hutchings. Like a lot of the best things in life, it will take a lot of patience from our staff and students as we wait for Roo to grow into her important leadership pooch self. It's hard to not want her around all the time, and it can feel downright mean to tell a room full of students they can only look at a puppy. But the promise of the long term payoff is so exciting.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this year's Senior Survivor Initiative. Their work has set up a solid fund base to get therapy dogs in all Howell schools and provide the resources required for these amazing animals.
Thanks also to Mrs. Jilek-Wolfe for her leadership in the therapy dog program.
And welcome to Roo - the black lab turned Husky that's capturing all of our hearts!
Sincerely,
Ben Malecki

Pickup and Drop-off Reminders
|
Our office staff works hard all day, and drop-off and pickup times are often the very busiest. For that reason, please be mindful of the following timeline:
End of the Day
Students who are parent pickups are dismissed from classes at 3:35.
For this reason, please don't enter the building after 3:30 to pick your child up. Rather, please wait either in the pickup line or acoss the crosswalk on the sidewalk. We all contribute to student safety by following these protocols- they ensure order and improve our ability to track student movements.
Beginning of the Day
Breakfast begins at 8:30. We expect students to enter the building only if they plan to eat breakfast and not to socialize.
We expect students in classrooms, ready to learn at 8:50!
