Dear Hutchings Community,
In the last newsletter, I was excited to share some of the great experiences that were happening as our students and staff approached Spring Break. I want to highlight more of these.
On Wednesday, March 22nd, our fifth graders and fifth grade teaching team hosted the National Park Expo. Mr. DeLand, Mrs. Reis, and Mrs. Stolle invited families, other Hutchings students, and district leaders to the Expo, which was held in the gymnasium. For the Expo, students prepared visual presentations, designed artwork, gave speeches to students and adults, and even dressed up!
The National Parks Project was an incredible example of how project-based learning can be beneficial. Students gained knowledge and skills by working for an extended time period to investigate a topic and design a response to demonstrate their understanding. I want to celebrate the work of the students who took risks as learners. Way to go! I want to celebrate the teachers for their steadfast belief in their students- our staff knows that when rigor and engagement work hand-in-hand, our students have meaningful experiences. Thank you all for bringing the Expo to Hutchings!
I also want to highlight our Girls on the Run participants. If you're unfamiliar with Girls on the Run, it inspires girls to recognize their individual value and strengths as they bond, connect, and form a strong team community.
55 girls from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are participating in Hutchings's Girls on the Run program right now. By the end of the season, the team will complete a 5K together. The Girls on the Run at Hutchings are supported by a great coaching staff, led by Mrs. Buckingham, Mrs. Reis, Mrs. Urban, Mrs. Stolle, Ms. Lentine, Ms. Chambers, and Ms. Conley. As we get closer to the 5K, I plan to highlight this group of runners and coaches more!
More opportunities are coming, too. There are field trips coming up for many students and 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students have their concerts on the horizon. I am so happy to see all of these great events come together for our great Hutchings kids!
Sincerely,
Ben Malecki
