Dear Northwest Families,
This week we brought each grade level together during specials to focus on our schoolwide PBIS program. These meetings gave us a chance to pause, reflect, and make sure we are all working toward the same goals when it comes to behavior and our school culture.
During the meetings, students had the opportunity to:
Reflect on Behavior – We talked about how choices in the classroom, hallways, lunchroom, and playground connect back to our CARE expectations: Compassionate, Accountable, Respectful, and Engaged.
Introduce Care Coins – Students were reminded of the many ways they can earn Care Coins by demonstrating positive behavior. We also shared how these coins contribute to schoolwide celebrations that bring us together as a community. Look for your student(s) to bring a yellow paper “coin” home and help them celebrate!
Meet Mrs. Hoffman – We were excited to introduce our new Positive Culture Coordinator, Mrs. Hoffman. She will be working closely with staff and students to continue building on the positive culture we’re so proud of here at Northwest.
As always, your support at home makes a huge difference. We ask that you take a few minutes to talk with your child about their behavior in some key areas where we are putting extra focus this year:
Bus – Remind your child that safety and respect are most important. Voices should be at a reasonable level, and students should stay seated while the bus is moving. While transportation handles most of the bus discipline, I would love for them not to have to discipline anyone.
Playground – Encourage safe play and inclusion. Students should take care of equipment and treat others the way they’d like to be treated. Talk to them about controlling their own behavior and body on the playground.
Bathrooms – Reinforce that bathrooms are for their intended use only, and should be kept clean, quiet, and respectful for everyone. We had a lot of damage in the bathrooms to start the year, but this has seemed to lessen with some of our interventions. Please remind them to use the bathroom properly.
We are thankful for your partnership in reinforcing these expectations at home. When school and home work together, our students truly soar!
Yours in education,
Craig Munro
